  • Cyberbully

We created these questions to help you start a conversation with your friends around the issues that come up in ABC Family’s original movie, Cyberbully. There are no right or wrong/answers—we just wanted to give you some topics to think about. . .

    Privacy

    1. Taylor’s mom tells her “What you do online isn’t exactly private.” What do you think she meant by that?

    2. Taylor initially thinks her mom doesn’t trust her to go online: she uses computer monitoring software and doesn’t allow her to have internet on her phone. Do you think that is too strict? Not strict enough?

    3. Taylor’s family has rules about online behavior: No giving out personal information, no inappropriate sites, etc. What rules, if any, do your parents or families have about your online behavior?

    Online Identity

    1. At first, Taylor seems uncomfortable filling out her Cliquester profile because it asks personal information (like the color of her underwear). She even wonders “What’s the point of answering these questions if they aren’t true?” Why do you think she joined Cliquester anyway?

    2. Scott thinks Cliquester is “raw” because “People talk trash on it and it’s kinda funny.” Why do you think we like seeing other people being brutally honest with each other online?

    Friendships/Relationships

    1. Have you ever started a rumor about someone you cared about? Why do you think Samantha pretended to be James?

    2. What did you think of Scott telling Taylor he wanted her to post a ‘bikini shot’ on Cliquester? Do you think there is pressure for girls to behave in a certain way online? Where does that pressure come from?

    3. Taylor struck back at Lindsay’s bullying online and called her a “b****.” Have you ever said something to someone online and wished you could take it back?

    4. Cheyenne lets Taylor down when things get tough. What do you think she could have done instead?

    Rumors/Gossip

    1. Why didn’t Taylor close her Cliquester account?

    2. Even though Taylor was getting bullied, she seemed addicted to finding out what people were saying about her. Why do you think she was determined to read all the rumors even though she was hurt by them?

    3. Random rumors and gossip seem to destroy Taylor’s reputation in a matter of minutes. Have you ever spread a rumor about someone that you didn’t know?

    School/Legal Involvement

    1. Taylor’s mom goes to the school to complain about her daughter’s bullying and the principal feels torn because there isn’t much he can legally do about it. What do you think schools should be doing about bullying?

    2. Taylor and her mom go to the media (the press) to tell their story publicly. What did you think of that decision? Do you think we need to hear more positive stories about teens who survive bullying?

    3. Taylor’s mom is frustrated when she asks her local Senator to create a law about cyberbullying and finds out he doesn’t even use the computer much. Do you think teens should have a more active role alongside lawmakers to help shape the bills that get passed?

    Taking Action

    1. Have you ever spoken back to a bully like Taylor and her friends did to Lindsay? What did it feel like?

If you haven’t yet, what do you hope that moment will look like?

    2. At Taylor’s group therapy, they point out three things you can do about cyberbullying:

    - Print out everything. Save the evidence when someone says something about you online.

    - Block the sender.

    - Speak up and tell an adult you trust what is going on.

What do you think of these three action steps? Easy to do? What stands in your way of doing something?

    3. The doctor tells Taylor’s group to “Do what it takes to stand up for yourself and each other.” What do you think of that advice?
